Military Prisoners Training Service Dogs
The MCIE Brig program is one of only two service dog training programs in the United States conducted in a military prison. It has been an exceptional program for advancing CFS and improving conduct at the Brig.
CFS training staff and the Brig Conduct Board interview and select military inmates for this program. Those that excel in these boards are selected and assigned a service dog in training. There is an average of 10 inmates in the program at any given time, and under the guidance of CFS staff, they are taught how to train.
The dogs live at the Brig, receiving nearly constant, one-on-one training. Subsequently they excel through at a much faster pace, decreasing total training time by 30 percent. Both training programs address the need to continue providing service dogs at no cost, increase the number of skilled service dog trainers in the industry and provide valuable job-training skills and career alternatives.
