Frequently Asked Questions
Can anyone get a service dog from Canines for Service?
Canines for Service provides Veterans from all conflicts with service-connect PTSD, Traumatic Brain Injuries, and mobility limitations with service dogs at no cost. If you are not a Veteran, we suggest using Assistance Dogs International, Inc. (ADI) to locate another non-profit program that may serve your specific needs.
I am a Veteran; how do I apply to receive a dog from Canines For Service?
To begin the application process, please fill out our prescreening questionnaire. After this has been completed, our Veteran Services Coordinator will contact you. You can access the prescreening questionnaire here.
How much does it cost me to receive a service dog from you?
Canines for Service does not charge or require fundraising the Veteran client for their service dog.
How long does it take to be paired with a service dog?
The average wait time for a service dog is one year. CFS does not place Veterans with service dogs on a “first come, first serve” basis. The individual needs of each Veteran client are assessed and matched with the next available service dog that best fits their determining factors.
Do I have to travel to North Carolina to receive my dog?
The travel needs and circumstances of CFS Veteran clients are evaluated by CFS on a case by case basis.
Can I train the dog I currently own or plan to purchase to be a service dog?
No, CFS does not train personal dogs to be service dogs.
Where do you get your service dogs in training?
CFS acquires candidates for the service dog training program from a variety of sources. CFS is a member of Assistance Dog International Breeding Co-Op. CFS also partners with local and national breeders as well as local shelters. CFS does not train personal pets to become a service dog.
What breeds do you use in your program and how big are they?
CFS seeks Retrievers and Retriever-mixes between the ages of 6 months – 2 years old. All CFS dogs are considered large, weighing anywhere from 60-90 pounds.
Can I choose which service dog I am partnered with?
No; the CFS team has a thorough process to determine the best possible match between the service dog and Veteran based on the needs of the client, personality, lifestyle, and the skillset of the dog.
